Background and Context

Historically, golf has been less welcoming to black women compared to other popular sports. However, since 2018, there has been a 23% increase in the number of women and girls playing golf on the course. Additionally, 43% more Black, Asian, and Latino women have taken up the sport.

Importance

The golf course is often regarded as a key networking tool, currently utilized predominantly by Caucasian males more than any other group.

Objectives

In the “Queens on the Greens” episode, our goal was to demonstrate that golf can be a warm, welcoming, and enjoyable environment, despite its reputation for being rigid and etiquette-driven. We also aimed to highlight that Black women are not only excelling in the sport but are also serious about it. While golf has traditionally been unwelcoming to people of color, we wanted to showcase how this group of women has made the sport an important part of their lives.

Impact

The goal is to encourage more Black women and people of color to learn how to golf and create groups that welcome new golfers to the sport.

Pre-Production Process

For each episode of the We Are Here Series, we used a software called Milanote to create a production plan.

Each plan included important information such as interview questions, shot lists, inspiration, the narrative arc, and more. Milanote allowed us to visually organize these elements, making us more efficient on location.

Production Plan

As the producer, Torrance was responsible for developing the concept, which included finding talent, securing locations, conducting pre-interviews, researching historical moments, assembling a crew, creating schedules, and managing the overall project. Production

The views at Woodmore Country Club are absolutely stunning. There were moments when the crew paused to take in the beauty surrounding us. In this production, we had a slightly larger team, and our goal was to capture as much footage as possible before the hot noon sun became too intense.

Transporting our gear in golf carts proved to be more challenging than we anticipated, which occasionally slowed us down. The main difficulty, however, was filming interviews against the window. Torrance and Chris worked diligently to ensure that the lighting was just right for each interview.

Would we film at a country club again? We certainly hope so!

The views at Woodmore Country Club are spectacular. We arrived on location before sunrise, and the crew took a moment to appreciate the beauty around us. For this episode, our team was larger than usual. Since the day we filmed was quite hot, our goal was to capture all the B-roll and supporting footage before noon and then head indoors for the interviews.

Filming on the course was relatively easy, but we faced challenges transporting our gear in golf carts, as there’s no practical way to secure items that aren’t in golf club bags.

Indoors, we encountered our biggest challenge. Chris and Torrance had to contend with the harsh noon light coming through the windows, which served as the backdrop for the interviews.

Overall, filming at a golf course wasn’t too difficult. Will we do it again? We certainly hope so!
