To me, the most important element in a story is the voices that tell it—people who have experienced something that we may never have encountered ourselves. I make my main character the guiding spirit of the documentary, leading you through the narrative. The supporting characters serve as stops along the journey, adding depth and value to the experience. By the time you reach the end of the story, you will feel as if you have lived this experience alongside them.
My process involves several key steps. First, my associate producer and I conduct research on the subject and the talent before holding a phone or virtual pre-interview. During this pre-interview, I aim to learn more about the talent while also beginning to build a relationship with them. I find this step crucial for ensuring that the talent feels comfortable with me during the on-location interaction.
Shortly after the pre-interview, we develop a pre-production plan. This document outlines important details about the project, such as inspiration, story outlines, location photos, and interview questions. At this stage, I also finalize filming dates with the talent and select the necessary crew members. Additionally, if we need historical images or any images provided by the talent, we will request them at this point.
The production and post-production processes are similar to those of any standard production. However, I like to keep the station updated on our progress and encourage them to feel like collaborators throughout the process.
